Once you have your learners licence you can begin to practice driving with appropriate supervision. You’ll need to be driving with someone who has held their open licence for at least 12 months. Remember to always display your L-Plates clearly and carry your licence with you. Before attempting to go for your provisional licence, you’ll need to record 100 hours of driving in your logbook.

L-Plates and holders can be bought from auto shops (such as Supercheap Auto and Autobarn), service stations and other retailers. When driving, they must be displayed on both the front and rear of your vehicle, so the ‘L’ can be seen clearly from a minimum 20m away. If not displayed correctly, demerit points and fines can apply to both yourself and your supervisor.
It’s important to note that your learner licence has different conditions to a provisional or open licence. For instance, you must have an appropriate supervisor with you at all times when driving, comply with the ‘0’ alcohol limit and follow any additional conditions outlined on your licence. Don’t forget to clearly display your plates and carry your licence while driving.
Queensland operates a ‘graduated licencing system’, commonly identified as the transition from L-Plates to P-Plates to an open licence. This was introduced to encourage the development of proficiency amongst young drivers before progressing to a higher licence class. To find out exactly what this means for you, check out
the Queensland Government’s ‘Young Drivers’ page.
If you’d like to test your understanding of the road rules, the Queensland Government provide an online quiz. It’s available for those learning to drive a motorcycle, car or heavy vehicle. We recommend giving it a go before sitting your real test.
If you’d like a refresher of the road rules before sitting your exam or practice test, visit the
Queensland Government’s road rules page. Here you’ll find all the information you need on giving way, road markings, overtaking, traffic lights, parking and other common road rules.
Receiving your learner licence is an exciting time. To transition from this first step to being able to drive without supervision, you’ll need to get started on completing your logbook—this will be provided to you with your licence. If you’re under 25 years’, the 100 hours supervised driving is required; for those older drivers, this isn’t required, but is recommended.
If you’d prefer to log your supervised driving hours on your phone rather than with the old ‘pen and paper’, the Queensland Government now offer a Logbook app. This is available for both
Apple and
Android devices.
A big thank you to my daughter’s instructor Andy, he is very patient, understanding, professional and a good motivator. He makes my daughter feel relaxed while driving. Hes very friendly and a good listener. He gives different driving techniques and at the end of the lesson my daughter gains more confidence on the road. Highly recommend. You will never go wrong booking a lesson. Many thanks.
